In a Nutshell

DITTMAN DEPARTING MEREDITH, RELOCATING TO LONDON
Jane DittmanJane Dittmann will leave her position as Meredith’s vice president for institutional advancement in June 2002 to relocate to London, England, with her husband.

“Jane has been a valuable member of Meredith’s Senior Management Team,” said President Hartford. “She has built on Meredith’s history of fundraising success and positioned the College for future fundraising growth. We wish her the best as she pursues new opportunities in London.”

Dittmann said, “Often personal circumstances change our professional expectations and choices we did not anticipate must be made. Although I have not spent as much time at Meredith as I might have liked, I am very proud of having been a part of the senior management team and the accomplishments of the IA staff.”

Dittmann oversees Meredith’s development, alumnae and parent relations, corporate and foundation relations, and planned giving efforts. Under her leadership, the advancement division has strengthened the Meredith Fund, developed a major gifts program, and increased participation and fundraising proceeds from alumnae and parent events.

“My work at Meredith has provided some of the most rewarding professional experiences I have had in my entire career,” Dittmann said. “I was initially drawn to Meredith because it is an excellent women’s college and an exceptional community of students, faculty and staff who genuinely invest themselves in the success of the institution. Every day has proven that to be true.”

“The staff of Institutional Advancement, and across campus, bring tremendous talent and energy to their roles and no doubt will create many opportunities for the institution. Meredith is now positioned to reach out to alumnae and friends in unprecedented ways, and to launch an ambitious campaign with every expectation of meeting our ambitious goals. Being at Meredith has been a wonderful personal and professional experience, and I am grateful to all those associated with the college who have made it so.”

PRESIDENT HARTFORD DETAILS BUDGET

grams; increasing financial aid resources; and raising support staff salaries. This budget will also address priorities for year two of the College’s plan, including increasing faculty salaries, beginning bond repayments for the science and mathematics building and increasing financial aid.

Important elements that are included in the budget are:

• an increase in the salary pool, with a 6% increase in the full-time faculty salary pool and a 3% increase for the staff salary pool,

• the first allocation for bond payment for the College’s building initiatives,

• continued support for the Meredith Technology Initiative,

• an additional increase in financial aid, including increases to merit scholarships, and

• ongoing support to UROP, community service initiatives and leadership programs.

Because “our priority list is always longer and more robust than our budget” President Hartford also noted several changes to next year’s proposed budget. Funding is not provided for salary increases for adjunct faculty, for the Creative Ideas Fund, or for inflationary increases for non-salary budget lines. Limited funding will be provided for the longevity bonus program, contingencies and parking improvements. The full liquidation of the bonds is planned for 2003-04 rather than for next year.

President Hartford reiterated that “this proposed budget is based on conservative enrollment projections. If we exceed these enrollment projections, there will be more resources available to add on in the fall.” In this case, the College will determine what will be added back by continuing to “take care of its people first.”
