Changes Announced for Meredith Performs Theatre Schedule

The Meredith College theatre department announces changes to the Spring 2004 performance season.

The Meredith Performs Theatre production of The Art of Self-Defense by Trish Johnson, which was scheduled for Feb. 18-22, has been canceled.

The performance schedule for the April production, The Apple Tree and The Brome Play of Abraham and Isaac, has also been amended. These plays will be performed April 1-2 at 8 p.m., April 3 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and April 4 at 2 p.m. in the Meredith’s outdoor McIver Amphitheater.

These two medieval pieces by Anonymous writers explore the genres of morality and mystery or cycle plays so mesmerizing and appealing during this time period. The Apple Tree attempts to teach a moral lesson through comic allegorical characters while The Brome Play of Abraham and Isaac depicts a favorite Biblical event. Both are sure to be as popular with today’s audience as they were in the Middle Ages. To reserve tickets, which are free to faculty and staff, call the Meredith College Box Office at 919-760-2840.

The changes to the theatre season became necessary when a Meredith production was selected for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival regionals.

The Meredith Performs Theatre production of And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank, has been selected to advance to regional competition in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. This is the first time that Meredith College has advanced to the regionals in this competition.

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival’s regional festival will be held February 3-8 at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Regionals include productions from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
