Introducing Students to "A World of Opportunities" at Meredith
By Tonya Winchester, FYE Co-Director and Ann Gleason, Dean of Students
Meredith College's orientation program is a campus wide effort to prepare and support new students in their transition to college and to the Meredith experience.
Planning for August orientation for freshmen and transfer students (of traditional and non-traditional age) begins as early as January of the same year. The Orientation Planning Committee, chaired by co-director for First Year Experience Tonya Winchester, includes participation from dedicated staff, faculty, and students from across the campus representing a variety of divisions, departments and student organizations. In order to have a successful, comprehensive orientation program, involvement and participation in the planning and implementation of activities and events are needed from all members of the campus community.
During orientation, over 150 student leaders and the majority of full-time faculty, staff and administrators are involved in welcoming new students.
Orientation 2005 features a theme of "Meredith: A World of Opportunities" which relates to the College's major events theme of "Our World, Our Responsibility: Contributing to Positive Change Around the Globe." On Saturday, August 13, the first official day of new student orientation, Meredith welcomes new students and their families to campus. The day of activities ends with a campus wide barbecue. During the next three days, before classes begin on August 17, new students are involved in a whirlwind of activities such as meeting with their student advisor and faculty advisor, touring the library, getting to know other students in their advising groups and in their residence halls, picking up their laptop and receiving technology training, learning more about how to be a successful student in and out of the classroom, and finalizing their academic schedules.
This year, Dean Rebecca Bailey created the artwork featured on orientation t-shirts. Members of the campus community will be invited to view this artwork and purchase an orientation t-shirt if they are interested. (An emp_all message sent in early August allows staff, faculty or others to view the artwork and purchase a shirt).
We appreciate all of the assistance that the Orientation Planning Committee receives while we prepare for the arrival of new students in August. Please contact Tonya Winchester, co-director for First Year Experience, at wincheto@meredith.edu, with feedback and suggestions so that we may continue to enhance the experience for new students and their families.

Meredith College Tsunami Relief Effort Surpasses Initial Goal
By Melyssa Allen
This summer, Meredith's "Tide of Hope" tsunami relief effort surpassed the College's initial fundraising goal.
Following the December 2004 tsunami, the "Tide of Hope" steering committee set a goal of raising $25,000 during the spring 2005 semester. As of July 2005, Meredith faculty/staff, students and others have raised $28,800, of which $5,098.50 was donated to Save the Children. The additional funds, and any money raised during the College's continuing efforts, will support three projects—purchasing fishing boats for two communities in Galle, sponsoring children at the Samanala orphanage and providing supplies for the Pelena School.
According to Campus Minister Sam Carothers, chair of the steering committee, personal donations have been the major source of funds for the effort, supplemented by student fundraising efforts. The sale of "Tide of Hope" buttons has generated more than $1,100.
Meredith efforts will continue throughout the fall semester, with groups including Residence Life and FYE classes planning to focus on the relief effort. Carothers says that Meredith is working with other local organizations, including NC State and Exploris, to plan an event to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the tsunami in December.
To kick-off the fall semester, the steering committee hosted a seminar offering suggestions on how faculty and staff can support "Tide of Hope," on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Meredith College Hires First Varsity Cross Country Coach
By Steve Barnes, Sports Information Director
Former Duke women's assistant coach Amy Olsen has been named the first varsity Cross Country coach at Meredith College.
The 33-year old Olsen helped lead the Blue Devils to the 2004 ACC women's championship and to a second place finish in the national meet. She hopes to do the same with the Angels.
"This is an ideal setting to be a head coach again," said Olsen, who led the Charleston Southern program from 1997-2002. "I've had the privilege to work with great athletes on the Division I level and have learned a lot from them. The competition might be a little different, but the training and techniques are the same."
The suburban Cincinnati native was a standout runner at Eastern Kentucky and started her coaching career at Northern Arizona in 1995, where she earned her master's degree in Exercise Science. Olsen moved to Charleston Southern in 1997, then to Duke in 2003.
"It's great to have such a qualified person to lead our first varsity cross country program," said Meredith Director of Athletics Jackie Myers. "After two successful years on the club level we wanted to make cross country our sixth varsity sport and Amy is the right person for the job."
Olsen starts her new job August 15 and is expected to teach some classes in the Health and Exercise Science department during the spring semester.
