Visual Voices: The Language of Typography

“Visual Voices: The Language of Typography,” an exhibit featuring the work of 14 Meredith art students and faculty member Dana Ezell Gay, will be featured in Meredith’s Rotunda Gallery January 29-March 25, 2012.

An opening reception will be held January 29 from 2-4 p.m.

The exhibit explores the power of typography as discourse, as a means to communicating visual and verbal messages that speak to the imagination and beauty of typographic form.

In her artist statement for the exhibit, Dana Ezell Gay wrote, “Typography possesses the ability to command space and allows the viewer to see inside the letters and words and discover their potential to communicate on a deeper level than merely speaking, reading, or writing them. Letterforms become vehicles of expression by their design, and when combined into words, can instantly convey context and clarify intent.”

The visual work within this group exhibition celebrates the formal visual properties of typography and how they influence & affect our perceptions; it explores the connections between form, content, and concept; and it offers the viewer both a unique view of the expressive nature of typography and of the many typographic systems at play.

Student artists include Shonta Walker, Andrea Fiess, Courtney Griffith, Lindsey McAvoy, Elizabeth Ahn, Emmy Errante, Caroline Wisner, Kristin Fowler, Anne Rhodes, Holly Myer, Jayne Worth, Jordan Love, Emily Melton, and Amanda Bridgman Slatter.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 2-5 p.m. The Rotunda Gallery is located in Meredith’s Johnson Hall administration building.
