USA South Softball East Division Regular Season Champs!

The Meredith College softball team clinched the USA South East Division Regular Season Championship Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over visiting Mary Baldwin. The title awards the Avenging Angels the privilege of hosting round one divisional playoff games this weekend in a best-of-three series.

East top-seed Meredith (26-14, 17-5 USA South) will host East six-seed William Peace (20-20, 12-10) Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader. Should the teams split Saturday’s games, a third and final game will be played Sunday, April 9, at Noon.

Meredith athletics will cover admission for MC faculty, staff, and students (must show CamCard). Let’s fill the stands! Admission will be charged both days per USA South policy ($6 adult; $3 senior/student/child).

This marks Head Coach Kim Scavone’s fourth twenty-win season during her seven-year tenure with the Avenging Angels softball program and most winningest USA South softball season in college history.

The top-six teams in each USA South division advance to the tournament playoffs with the top-three seeds hosting round one games. Winners advance to a double-elimination tournament in LaGrange, Georgia, beginning April 13 as part of the Spring Festival.

The lacrosse Angels wrap up the regular season this week and currently sit atop the USA South standings. The reigning conference champions, MC Lax hopes to capture the program’s fourth consecutive tournament title and NCAA tournament invite.

Meredith tennis will also conclude the conference schedule this week and must finish as one of the top-four teams in the East Division in order to advance to the USA South Tournament.

Unlike Meredith’s other seven sports, track & field is not sponsored by the USA South, so the team will wrap up the 2017 outdoor season at the All-Coast Track & Field Championships at the Durham County Memorial Stadium Thursday, April 20. Current USA South members Covenant, Methodist, and Piedmont will join Meredith. Pfeiffer, new to the conference next year and transitioning from NCAA Division II to III, will also participate, along with Division III Gallaudet from Washington, D.C.
