In spite of the season’s cold, rainy weather, the spring sports press on with the 2014 campaign. As of March 19, Meredith tennis shares the lead in the USA South conference standings with Methodist and new member Covenant.
Lacrosse dropped to a tie for second after losing a tough battle with league-leader Piedmont. The softball team sits in the middle of the pack with more than half the conference schedule left to play.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the USA South Athletic Conference. As part of an ongoing celebration, the conference announced an anniversary team for each of the league's sponsored sports. On Friday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the softball field, Meredith College athletics will recognize the 32 Avenging Angels selected to an anniversary team. The afternoon event includes a nod to National Student-Athlete Day as well as NCAA Division III Week, which all occur in early April. Both the softball and tennis teams host Mary Baldwin that day as well.
The 16th Annual Meredith College Golf Classic will be held at the Arnold Palmer signature course of Brier Creek Country Club Monday, April 7. Lunch will be served prior to the 1 p.m. shotgun start, and the day includes a putting contest, silent auction, snacks, and cookout.
The Meredith community is encouraged to support this event as a player, volunteer, hole sponsor, or booster. Register online Contact Fiona Barkley, the golf tournament director, for creative ways to join the fun.
The Meredith College Summer Sport Camp online registrations are now open! Avenging Angel basketball, soccer, and volleyball coaches will host a series of day and overnight camps for youth of all ages, and the online registration simplifies the process for you. Access details and registration forms.
New to Meredith College this spring are USTA Play Days. Meredith College joins the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to offer new opportunities for youth players to learn to play. USTA Play Days are designed for players of all ages and abilities and introduce competition with a fun, low-pressure format. We place emphasis on participation and effort, instead of wins and losses. For a minimal fee, youth players ages 10 and under will enjoy a fun environment to sharpen skills or learn new ones under the direction of experienced tennis coaches here at Meredith.
