Meredith College will host a symposium on March 3, 2012, focusing on the role of administrators and teachers in implementing North Carolina’s new mathematics standards.
Dr. Steve Leinwand, a principal research analyst at American Institutes for Research, is the featured speaker. Leinwand will present “The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: Hopes, Fears and Challenges as We Enter the Brave New World.”
Leinwand has over 30 years of leadership positions in mathematics education. He is the author of several mathematics textbooks and the books “Sensible Mathematics: A Guide for School Leaders” and “Accessible Mathematics: 10 Instructional Shifts That Raise Student Achievement.”
The event also includes lunch and a choice of one of four special interest breakout sessions. Breakout topics are:
•An update on the end-of-grade tests for grades 3-8 with Michael Gallagher from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction;
•An opportunity for conversations with Steve Leinwand;
•An exploration of the online First in Math program, provided by Suntex International Inc. for all TAP Math schools; and
•A review of resources for grades K-8 for Common Core Math by DPI staff.
The symposium schedule runs from 9:30 a.m. (registration) through 2:30 p.m.
The symposium is sponsored by Teachers and Administrators Partnering for Mathematics Learning (TAP Math). The purpose of TAP Math is to develop school-based visions of quality mathematics instruction and to create Mathematics Instructional Leadership Teams in participating school districts. The TAP Math project office is housed at Meredith College.
