Summer Book Inspires Service Project

The Summer Reading Program selection “Half the Sky” by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn inspired this year’s First Year Experience (FYE) Service Project. The Meredith community can support their efforts by participating in two events that were created to further enrich the critical learning and understanding of “Half the Sky.”

The FYE “Sky Walkers” awareness walk against the oppression of women in developing countries will take place on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Students, faculty and staff who would like to participate should meet at the gazebo near the Chapel at 10 a.m. Participants are asked to wear a blue or white T-shirt, and come walk the Meredith Mile.

Make a donation to KIVA: Each FYE class is raising money for KIVA, an organization that provides micro-loans to help the working poor establish financial independence. Learn more about KIVA at

Faculty, staff and students may donate in several ways: sponsor a student in an FYE class, make a contribution at the KIVA booth in the Cate Center the week of September 13-17, or give money directly through the Office for First Year Experience, 1st floor Park Center. All money raised from the KIVA booth, and from direct donation to the Office for FYE, will be split evenly among classes.
