Students Explore Opportunities at Internship Expo

Meredith students learned about a range of internship opportunities and connected with potential employers at an Internship Expo on Friday, September 19, sponsored by the Office of Career Planning. The 18 employers in attendance included Marbles Kids Museum, Allscripts, Delve Interiors, and Credit Suisse.

Some, like Julie Strachota of AllScripts, had come to Meredith for the first time.

“I like that it has a more casual feeling – it helps us identify and narrow down qualified applicants,” said Strachota of the event, which was designed to be more introductory in nature and intended for all ages of students. Strachota said Allscripts has a variety of internship opportunities, from software development to marketing to human resources.

James Whalen was also new to Meredith. He was looking for students to work on Cynthia Ball’s campaign for the North Carolina House.

“I have been very impressed so far with the students’ professionalism and excitement,” said Whalen.

In contrast, Allie Johnson, ’11, brought firsthand experience to the expo. Now employed as an interior designer at Delve, she first worked as an intern right after graduating from Meredith. She was hired full-time after just three months.

“I wasn’t sure I wanted to do commercial furniture, but I loved it,” said Johnson, who learned about her internship through Networking Angels, an organization of Meredith alumnae that helps students and graduates develop their careers.

Chloe Ford is a campus recruiter at Credit Suisse, a long-term Meredith partner that frequently goes on to hire their interns.

“I feel like we gained some really great contacts,” said Ford. She noted that she had spoken with a number of first-year and sophomore students. “It’s good to start early building rapport with your company of choice.” Credit Suisse also has a mentoring program specifically for sophomore students.

Jane Matthews, assistant director of employer relations at Meredith, was pleased with the turnout.

“You never know how it will go when you’re planning an event like this, but it was great. Lots of students attended and there was good energy,” said Matthews. “It’s very exciting for our students.”
