Students Benefit from Guest Speakers’ Perspectives

Students in Meredith College’s Introduction to Communication Class have the opportunity this month to hear from professionals in the field.

Associate Professor of Mass Communication Doug Spero invites professionals to discuss the different career paths available to communication students.

“We encourage the students to get outside experience through internships and encourage them to get part-time jobs in the media so they will be ready for the profession,” said Spero. “Most of the speakers are participants in our internship program. I also want our students to hear from people in the industry now, and have their view on the field.”

This semester’s speakers represent broadcast media, public relations agencies and media relations. Curtis Media Group President Phil Zachary spoke to Spero’s class on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Curtis Media Group, based in Raleigh, is the largest network of radio stations in North Carolina. Its local stations include 96 Rock, 94.7 WQDR, and WPTF news radio.

Zachary offered the students the perspective he’s gained in his 30-year career in broadcasting.

Upcoming speakers include:
•TV News Directors Rob Elmore and Rick Wills on November 13;
•Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez, who will speak about police media relations on November 16; and
•Representatives from Genesis Marketing Partners on November 18.

Communications 100 meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 a.m. in room 162 of the Science and Mathematics Building. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join the class for these guest speakers.
