Standing There: An Exhibition by Chris Cassidy
“Standing There” is an exhibition by Chris Cassidy featuring works across a wide range of media. It opens Sunday, January 29, 2012 with a reception from 2 p.m.-4 p.m., and continues through March 25 in the Frankie G. Weems Art Gallery.
Engaged with contemporary technology, Cassidy creates with the intent to envision place while also envisioning the compromised devices of seeing place. The projects range from single-channel video work to more complicated works employing custom software and hardware. The exhibition includes an interactive composite video assembled from a collaborative project with participants from the Meredith College community.
According to Cassidy, “It is my contention in this work that our always already-mediated experience of our environment is inseparable from the practical difficulties of our relationship to the natural world.”
“Standing There” brings together a number of Cassidy’s projects, including several recent pieces using installation, video and digital media to explore interactions with specific places through intermediary constructs such as maps and models.
Chris Cassidy's area of expertise includes sculpture, installation and digital media. He is currently associate professor of design/new media and director of graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His work has appeared in exhibitions and screenings throughout the US and Europe. He has been commissioned for work by private and public organizations, including permanent installations at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the State University of New York. Cassidy received his BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and completed his MFA in Sculpture at the University at Albany.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 2 – 5 p.m. The Weems Art Gallery is located in the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center on the western edge of the Meredith College campus, across from the Weatherspoon Gym.
