Shapiro to Deliver Faculty Distinguished Lecture

Professor of Dance Sherry Shapiro will deliver the 2013 Meredith College Faculty Distinguished Lecture on March 12 at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium.

Shaprio’s lecture, “The Hair Project: Negotiating the Politics of the Body,” was inspired by her time as a Fulbright Scholar in South Africa. Her Fulbright research project focused on dance education in the new South African curriculum. She examined the implications for dance education in the process of democratic transformation.

She also taught a choreography course for dance education students at the University of Cape Town and in the community, and provided workshops in dance education for teachers.

The course and workshops used a process Shapiro developed and uses at Meredith. She describes the process as using “dance as a vehicle for increasing both self and social understanding among students.”

In her Faculty Distinguished Lecture, Shapiro will illuminate how her choreographic work in South Africa was a process for increasing personal reflection, written narrative, movement and cultural analysis. The presentation will also include a dance performance.

The first Faculty Distinguished Lecture was presented by Norma Rose in December 1964. According to “Faculty Distinguished Lectures 1964-1981,” the lecture series recognizes “a significant achievement of research by a faculty member.”

The Faculty Distinguished Lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the Johnson Hall Rotunda. This event is sponsored by Meredith’s convocation committee.
