The Sociology/Criminology Club is sponsoring the Fourth Annual Diva Dash. This event is held in partnership with Interact and is a kickoff to Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The event is a fun way to raise awareness about an important issue that affects many college-age women. Although it is a serious issue, the Diva Dash as a non-threatening space to explore the issue of sexual assault. The Diva Dash will include food, a cake walk to raise money for Interact and a 50 yard dash in heels. Speakers will include an Interact staff member and a sexual assault survivor who will share her story.
Sexual Assault Awareness Week also included a Take Back the Night event on Wednesday, April 3. Sponsored by WINGS, Meredith's nontraditional student organization, this event began with a viewing of the film “Telling Amy’s Story” (telling.psu.edu), followed by a march and candlelight vigil.
On Monday, author Kathleen Bogle, an associate professor of sociology and criminal justice at LaSalle University, spoke about her book "Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus."
Her book is the first to understand the new sexual culture prevalent in colleges across the United States on its own terms. She argues that college life itself promotes casual relationships among students on campus. But her work raises some important questions and concerns about safety, healthy relationships and whether young men and young women want the same things out of relationship.
This event was part of a series of events designed to raise awareness of sexual assault, as a kickoff to Sexual Assault Awareness month.
