Professor Analyzes Michael Jackson Memorial

Meredith Professor of Psychology Rosemary Hornak was featured as an expert in an Associated Press analysis of the public memorial service held for singer Michael Jackson.

The article, “From a Celebrity’s Death, a Very American Memorial” by Ted Anthony, was an analysis of the memorial as an example of “sharing grief with millions of others – on TV, in mass spectacles and across the Internet.”

Hornak was asked to analyze the motivation for watching or participating in such an event.

“People want to be a part of something. And this is something really memorable. Why did everybody go to Woodstock,” asked Hornak, who studies how people remember.

The Associated Press has been published in more than 50 news outlets, including “The New York Times,” Salon.com, "The Seattle Times," “The Detroit Free Press,” “The Richmond Times Dispatch,” and locally in “The News & Observer.”
