Pianist Margaret Evans and Students Rack Up Performances, Awards
Piano faculty member Margaret Evans performed in recital with Yang Xi, Meredith violin/viola faculty member, in Carswell Recital Hall to a full house on April 23, playing music of Ysaye, Stravinsky, Schubert, and Piazzolla. On April 14, Evans presented a piano master class for music majors at East Carolina University for the second year in a row. She was invited to judge the Virginia Music Teachers Annual Piano Competition on May 7. This was the first time a judge has been invited for two consecutive years. On May 22, she served as judge for the North Carolina Symphony Concerto Competition, preliminary round, for the third time. Evans’ piano students have been busy performing and winning honors in recent weeks. James Wood, who has studied in Meredith’s Community School of Music for eleven years with Evans, has been awarded a scholarship to New England Conservatory. On May 15 Wood performed a senior recital of half classical, half jazz. On May 6, high school senior Andy Hoang performed the entire Haydn Piano Concerto in D major as winner of the NC School of Science and Math Concerto Competition. On April 26, Kyler Chen and Andy Dai performed at the UNC School of the Arts as first- and second-place winners of its annual Classical Competition; the performances were professionally recorded and the pianists received monetary awards. Kyler Chen also won the Raleigh Music Club Competition and performed a Winners’ Concert on May 9. Andy Dai and Kenny Hoang have been selected as finalists (two of only three pianists) in the Cameron Arts Museum Young Musicians Competition, held June 3.
