Oceanaut Celine Cousteau to Speak April 22

Céline Cousteau, Ocean Futures Society international project coordinator, will give Meredith College’s 2009 Woman of Achievement lecture on April 22, at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. Cousteau’s lecture, which is titled “People and the Natural World: An Exploration of Connection,” will take place on Earth Day.

As an educational ambassador and Cousteau “oceanaut,” Céline Cousteau seeks to educate through adventure and exploration. Daughter of ocean explorer and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau and granddaughter of the legendary Jacques Cousteau, she is featured in the PBS series “Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures.”

Cousteau has collaborated with her father's Ocean Futures Society promoting the educational program “Ambassadors of the Environment” throughout her travels. The mission of Ocean Futures Society is to explore our global ocean, inspiring and educating people throughout the world to act responsibly for its protection, documenting the critical connection between humanity and nature, and celebrating the ocean’s vital importance to the survival of all life on our planet.

Cousteau has worked on the preparation of expeditions, field production and as an on camera presenter. Recently, Cousteau has worked on a documentary for Discovery Channel, aiding scientists who conduct research on the many shark species of the Great Barrier Reef.

Cousteau’s lecture is part of The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College. The series stimulates and enhances the intellectual and academic climate at Meredith College and the broader community. Through this lecture series, which was established in 2005, Meredith promotes intellectually rigorous discussions that revolve around the College’s annual theme, which for 2008-09 is “Sustaining Our Environment: Developing Our Greenprint.”
