Meredith’s Office of Career Planning Hosts Career Week

Meredith College held Career Week from February 13-18, 2017, encouraging students to participate in building their professional careers. The events were hosted by the College’s Office of Career Planning (OCP).

The biggest event of the week was the annual Eastern North Carolina Career Alliance Career Fair, which was held at N.C. State’s McKimmon Center on Wednesday, February 15. More than 85 employers and graduate schools were in attendance at the fair, including Aflac, BB&T, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC, UNC-TV, East Carolina University, and UNC Chapel Hill.

Meredith senior Kensey Covert found significance in physically interacting and networking with employers. “It’s important to have face-to-face interaction, and to see and hear about the culture of the business to know if it would fit for you,” said Covert. “I also found it valuable to keep your eyes open to businesses that you may have never recognized.”

Jane Matthews, Meredith assistant director of employee relations, mentioned how valuable networking events such as Career Week are for college students.

“Students had the opportunity to meet with 90 different employers and graduate schools from a variety of industries, and many came away with interview opportunities for both internships and full-time roles, as well as networking contacts,” said Matthews. “The fair is also a great opportunity for younger students to begin to explore options and research opportunities."

Drop-in sessions for resume reviews were also held by the OCP prior to the fair, as well as a career fair prep session. Career Week finished with Go Strong in Graduate School, a graduate school prep workshop for students considering education after Meredith.
