Meredith Students Share What They Like Most About Raleigh

Meredith College’s location in Raleigh, which is North Carolina’s capital city and home to thousands of other college students, plays a big part in lives of our students. Recent surveys have named Raleigh "America's Best City," the second best place nationally for young professionals, and the number one best place for business and careers.

As part of our summer series of student advice, Meredith’s Office of Admissions asked a group of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors what they like most about Raleigh.

•“I love the fact that there is so much to do in Raleigh and that it is such a diverse city. There is so much to do; everything from eating, to going to museums, to going out with friends, to going to the movies. There is no way to do everything!”—Elizabeth Oates, ’13

•“My favorite thing about Raleigh is that it's a big city with lots to do! I like that Meredith is a smaller community nestled inside a large community like Raleigh. Meredith is in a great location. Target, the mall, and many restaurants are not far from campus. I can honestly say I am never bored in Raleigh!” –Brittany Murray, ’13

•“I love that there is so much to do in Raleigh that everyone can find their perfect fit. You are in the middle of a large city with so much diversity and excitement, yet still only a few miles from smaller towns that you can escape to when the city life gets too overwhelming. Coming from a very small town myself, I found this particularly comforting.” –Amanda Hall, ’15

•“My favorite thing about Raleigh is that you have tons of opportunities and ways to get involved in the city outside of campus to keep you busy and meet others besides who lives on campus. It also helps that you are in walking distance to many places downtown and you have the greenway at the back of campus.”— Kaitlyn Turner, ’14

• “The variety of restaurants on Hillsborough Street—there is always somewhere good to eat in Raleigh. My friends are always trying new places and meeting other college students—definitely a great part of social life for a college student.” –Pooja Ghai, ’13

•“My favorite thing about Raleigh is that you are no more than a few minutes away from everything you need. I come from a small town so that is a really different concept for me.”—Angel Jackson, ’13

•“I love the Raulston Arboretum and the Little Rose Garden by the Little Theater.” – Kristen Gallagher, ’13

• “I love the atmosphere here. There is always something going on and Raleigh is one of the up and coming cities. It has so many opportunities from jobs to cultural events. It really is a great place to live.”—Mary Rawls, ’13

•“I love how Raleigh is not too big or too small of a city. There is so much to do, but at the same time you feel like you can belong somewhere. For students who are not from Raleigh, I think Meredith is in the perfect place for people who don’t know their way around. It’s also nice being close to NC State. You get to run into interesting people all the time that you know or get to know.”—Melissa de Leon, ’14

•“There is always something going on or somewhere new to visit. My friends and I especially love the local restaurants. My roommate is very picky, but I love to experiment with food, and Raleigh finds a way to cater to both of our dietary needs. In the summer, I love going to North Hills because they have free Beach Music concerts on Thursday nights!”-- Chloë Williams, ’13

• “My favorite thing about Raleigh is being in a city, and being independent. With all my family still in Florida, Raleigh is my city, and I love that. I also love that I can be in my little Meredith bubble, but when I want the big school feel, I can go visit my friends at State.”—Sara Owens, ’15

•“The variety in what's offered. There are all sorts of different types of places to eat, museums, shows and movie theaters.” – Rebecca Jernigan, ’13
