Meredith Students Earn Interior Design Awards

The work of two Meredith College students majoring in interior design was recognized at the Carolinas Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (CCASID) spring meeting, held May 29 - 30, 2009 in Greenville, S.C.

Senior Jennifer Resch, of Clayton, N.C., won first place in the 2009 Otto Zenke Competition project. Resch received $1,000 and the Meredith College Interior Design program received a matching $1,000. Senior Brenna Anderson, of Benson, N.C., won second place. Anderson received a $750 cash prize.

The annual Otto Zenke student competition is open to all college and university Interior Design programs with Student Chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) in North and South Carolina. Resch and Anderson were the top winners among 48 entries submitted.

Martha Burpitt, professor of human environmental sciences, assigned the Otto Zenke competition project to her senior level interior design class; six projects that met all aspects of the problem statement were then submitted to the competition.

Otto Zenke was esteemed as one of the top interior designers in the world; he had design studios in Greensboro, New York and London. A scholarship fund was established in his memory for interior design students in the Carolinas. This year the competition's project specifications were for the renovation of a historic building for mixed use development. The client, Richard Watson, single and an entrepreneur in his mid-thirties purchased a historic building and requested conceptual and schematic design phases for the first floor coffee, tea and wine shop and his residence on the third floor..
