Meredith Students Attend Inauguration

Meredith students were among the estimated 1 million people to attend the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States on January 20, 2009.

Undergraduates Maggie Bizzell and Millie Griffith and graduate student Sarah Broome were able to travel to the nation’s capital for the event, each for different reasons.

Bizzell was chosen for the University Presidential Inaugural Conference, a five-day program that included attending inaugural festivities.

While in Washington, Bizzell submitted entries that are included in a local station’s inauguration coverage. Her blog entries are included on WRAL-TV’s web site, along with entries from reporters. In her blog entry for January 20, Bizzell wrote about the atmosphere at the inauguration.

“One word can describe Washington, D.C. today: Energy. Nervous energy, positive energy, emotional energy. If you can think of any kind of energy that can be felt by a human, it was present at the inauguration,” wrote Bizzell.

In addition to watching Obama take the oath of office, Millie Griffith was able attend a special brunch on Monday, an opportunity that came about because she had worked as an intern on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in North Carolina. Others attending the brunch included former President Bill Clinton and “The Nanny” star Fran Drescher.

“I’m happy I went and got to see all the people, and take part in this piece of history,” Griffith told her hometown newspaper, Elizabeth City, N.C.’s “The Daily Advance.”

A contest and a generous friend resulted in Sarah Broome’s inaugural attendance. A friend, who was the winner of a sweepstakes sponsored by the entertainment news program “Extra” and QVC, invited Broome to join her.

The contest also included attending the Creative Coalition Inaugural Ball and appearing on “Extra”. Broome is a student in Meredith’s Master of Science in nutrition program.

For Meredith students who were not able to attend the inauguration in person, the History and Politics Club hosted a viewing and discussion in Cate Center.
