Meredith Student to Present at UN Commission

Meredith senior Mariamawit Tadesse is one of five North Carolina college students selected to present at the United Nations' 56th Annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which will be held February 27-March 9, 2012, in New York City.

The theme of this year’s UN event is the empowerment of rural women. Tadesse’s presentation topic is agriculture and rural women farmers. The other students, from NC State University and UNC-Chapel Hill, are presenting about political participation of rural women, technology education for girls, sexual trafficking in North Carolina, and rural women and community health systems. In addition to their own presentations, the WomenNC Fellowship team will attend and participate in CSW sessions throughout the week.

The students are sponsored by the nonprofit WomenNC. They will give presentations at the NC State University Club on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, as part of their WomenNC Fellowship before they share their research at the United Nations.

The students were featured in The News & Observer’s February 15, 2012, issue.
