Meredith Student Participates in 2013 Teen Vogue Fashion University

Meredith College student Alanna Ryder was able to make connections in the fashion industry as a participant in the 2013 Teen Vogue Fashion University.

The three-day event, held October 18-20 in New York City, was filled with seminars with designers, stylists, editors and other fashion professionals. Participants must apply to the program, which is open to high school and college students.

“Teen Vogue Fashion University is for the lovers of the crazy fashion world. It brings us all together and allows us to build great connections and network, which is a big key to making it into this industry,” said Ryder, a junior who is earning a degree in fashion design.

A highlight of the program for Ryder was the opportunity to meet designer Christian Siriano, one of her design inspirations.

“He got his start on Project Runway at 21, which is how old I am. Five years later he is a huge success and has had 13 collections,” Ryder said. “It was so interesting to hear his thoughts on the difference between school and the fashion industry in Europe versus the U.S.”

Ryder credits Academic & Career Planning sessions at Meredith with preparing her for networking successfully. Ryder participated in a career fair in Raleigh this fall, and made connections that led her to meet with Ralph Lauren executive Sal Taschetta while she was in New York, and should result in an internship this summer.

Ryder also said her Meredith education has prepared her. “I have already grown so much,” she said. “I have gained confidence and hold my head high when talking to people in the industry.”
