Meredith Student Named Newman Civic Fellow

Molly Smerko, '18, a double major in religious & ethical studies and Spanish, was named a 2016 Newman Civic Fellow. Smerko is a student leader who is active in a variety of social initiatives. She has been involved in rural poverty work, suicide awareness, and interfaith understanding.

The Newman Civic Fellowship honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Newman Civic Fellows are recommended by college and university presidents to acknowledge motivation and ability in public leadership. Campus Compact, which awards the Newman Civic Fellowship, is a national consortium of schools dedicated to community engagement; Meredith is a founding member of the North Carolina affiliate.
