Meredith Sponsors Sustainable Summer Move Out

Meredith College has recently launched “Pass It…Don’t Trash It,” an effort to help students move out of the residence halls in a more environmentally friendly manner.
As students move out for the summer, they are encouraged to donate items to Meredith’s Daisy Trade ReUse Store and other organizations rather than throwing unwanted goods into the trash.

Collection will take place through May 8, 2011.

The following items will be collected in residence hall parlors:
•Clothing, shoes, room décor and accessories (Daisy Trade donations);
•School supplies and books (Daisy Trade donations);
•Toiletries and cleaning supplies (donation for farmworkers);
•Unopened non-perishable food (donation to food bank);
•Dining Hall dishes and to-go containers.

The following recyclable items will be collected beside Meredith dumpsters:
•Glass, plastic and aluminum;
•Paper, including notebook paper, folders and class work;
•Cardboard (should be stacked beside dumpster).

The “Pass it…Don’t Trash It” effort is a project of Meredith College Residence Life, Student Leadership and Service, and Sustainability, in partnership with Goodwill of Eastern North Carolina.

The Daisy Trade ReUse Store and the waste diversion project were created as part of Meredith’s Greenprint sustainability plan. Both efforts relate to the College’s goals to model environmental responsibility in daily operations and to minimize waste generated.

The Greenprint plan also calls for the College to make reusable goods available first to the community before disposal, including office supplies, clothing, furniture, and books. In addition to the Daisy Trade, Meredith operates an office supply swap for faculty and staff.
