Meredith Names New Women’s Basketball Coach

Melinda Campbell has been named head women’s basketball coach at Meredith College. Campbell has spent the last 17 years as a faculty member at Meredith College and most recently was the department chair in Health, Exercise and Sports Science. She also coached the Meredith tennis team from 1992-2000, gaining Meredith’s first NCAA tournament bid.

Campbell will continue to serve as a professor of exercise and sports science in addition to her basketball coaching duties. Campbell takes over the Avenging Angels as David Zinn steps down in order to take on more administrative duties at Meredith as assistant athletics coordinator.

“I am pleased to name Dr. Melinda Campbell as our new head basketball coach. Coach Campbell is no stranger to Meredith and Meredith athletics. In the mid-nineties through 2000 she led the Meredith tennis team and worked hard to help her team receive their first regional ranking and an eventual trip to the NCAA tournament,” said Meredith Athletics Director Jackie Myers. “Coaching is her true passion and basketball is her favorite sport to coach, but the timing was just never right. She is extremely excited to have this opportunity and we are very pleased that she was ready to get back into coaching. No one knows Meredith better and no one is more passionate about leading this team. I am confident she has the ability to take this program in the direction we want to go.”

Campbell’s most recent tenure at Meredith includes administration, teaching and being a loyal supporter of Meredith athletics while helping to build a new academic major in Exercise and Sports Science. As head coach of the Meredith tennis team, she led the team to national ranking three times (1995, 1998, and 2000), south regional rankings five times (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000) and to the College’s first NCAA tournament bid in 2000. Prior to her time at Meredith, she was the head basketball, head volleyball and head girls track coach in the Greater Clark County School System (Jeffersonville, Ind.). During her six-year stint at Greater Clark County, she produced basketball and track sectional championships and a state basketball runner-up. Campbell was named Coach of the Year numerous times including Southern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball and Track three times (1984, 1985, and 1987) and Southern Indiana Coaches Association (1987). She also focused on helping her players move to the next level with seven being awarded Division I basketball scholarships and three Division II basketball scholarships. Campbell also served as a women’s basketball graduate coaching assistant at Division I Indiana University.

Campbell was a standout student athlete at Gardner-Webb College on the basketball and volleyball teams, earning Most Valuable Player honors.

Campbell holds a Ph.D. in physical education teacher education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Master of Science in physical education from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Science in health and physical education from Gardner-Webb College.
