Meredith Mourns Passing of Harry Simmons, Former Supervisor of Buildings Maintenance

Meredith College mourns the passing of Harry Simmons, who died February 21, 2014. Simmons retired from Meredith College in 1986 after nearly four decades of service as supervisor of buildings maintenance.
Simmons, who was born in 1924, is survived by his son, daughter, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.I

n his obituary, the family said of Simmons’ work at Meredith College: “He worked with Carl Lowe and helped build Jones Auditorium at Meredith College and from that work he obtained a full time job at Meredith. Meredith was his life; Meredith was his home. He had a major impact on the [creation] of the lake at Meredith and enjoyed visiting the lake, occasionally fishing from the lake, and he especially enjoyed the Easter Sunrise Services each year. If you asked Dad how many trees were destroyed at Meredith College during Hurricane Hazel in October 1954 he could tell you the exact number; his relationship with Meredith was indeed special.”

A funeral service was held for Simmons on February 25, 2014.

Simmons’ contributions to Meredith College were noted by Vice President for College Programs Jean Jackson during a presentation about Meredith history on February 25, 2014. The presentation was in honor of the College’s Founders’ Day celebration. Meredith commemorates its founding on February 27.
