Meredith Marks Field Opening with Wins

The Meredith soccer team started the season out with a bang, opening on their new turf with a 3-1 win over Guilford College. The Avenging Angels took the early 1-0 lead in the first half, then added two more in the second half.

The Avenging Angels were led by Kristy Knight with two goals. Maggie Hart had the third goal of the night to go with her assist. Alex Calvert had the assist on Knight's first goal.

The win by the Avenging Angels was the culmination of an evening full of celebration to mark the official opening of Meredith’s new athletic field and track complex. The events began with a fun run/walk for the campus community at 4 p.m., followed by a cross country meet against Peace College at 5 p.m.

The Avenging Angels won the meet 25-36. Meredith runners took third through ninth place to take the team win. The Avenging Angels were led by Joyce McLeod in the two mile race.

At 6:30 p.m., Meredith held an opening ceremony for the new complex, which Athletics Director Jackie Myers said is “sure to be the envy of every team in the conference.”

Meredith College President Maureen Hartford scored the first goal on the new field, when she made a ceremonial first kick prior to the Avenging Angels soccer team taking the field against Guilford College.
