Meredith College to Host NC Dance Festival January 23-25

The North Carolina Dance Festival (NCDF), an annual statewide showcase of North Carolina dance artists, will stop at Meredith College’s Jones Auditorium on January 23-24 at 8 p.m.

The NCDF, unique in the country and now a North Carolina institution, began in 1991 as a weekend of concerts in the UNC/Greensboro Dance Theater showcasing dance artists from across the state. In addition to Raleigh, the 2008-09 festival stops are Boone, Greensboro, Wilmington and Charlotte.

On Friday, January 23, the NCDF artists are EEMotion (Charlotte), Sidelong Dance Company (Winston-Salem), Autumn Mist Belk (Raleigh), kearns dance project (Burlington). On Saturday, January 24, the artists are Valerie Midgett (Boone), Nicole Laliberté (Greensboro), John Gamble Dance Theater (Greensboro), nosi dance theater (Hillsborough). Meredith’s 2008-09 Affiliate Artist Anna Smith Milling, will also present her new work, a high-tech large ensemble work, each night.

Children’s Dance Festival: As part of the Festival weekend, Meredith will host the Children’s Dance Festival on Sunday, January 25 at 3 p.m. This annual performance will feature area pre-professional dancers from Enloe High School (modern), the American Dance Projeckt (jazz), SASSI Stompers (clogging), Ruby Slippers (Chinese dance), and Meredith Dance Theatre performing guest artist Shane O’Hara’s spirited work, “A Day in the Life of a Brain.” This short concert is ideal for young audience members.
