Meredith Avenging Angels Have Championship Season

The Meredith College Avenging Angels closed out the year with five USA South Championships, two NCAA Tournament appearances, two conference Coach of the Year honors, one NCAA Division III Region Freshman of the Year, one USA South Player of the Year, one Rookie of the Year, seven All-Region selections, two league tournament Most Valuable Players, and a host of All-Conference, All-Sportsmanship, and USA South weekly recognitions throughout 2016-2017. In addition, several athletes ranked in the top-tier of their sport, both regionally and nationally, in a variety of statistics elevating Meredith’s place among Division III programs.

With support from coaches and student-athletes, the athletics administration established two new program-wide awards presented at the 2017 Athletic Awards Night. Junior lacrosse attack Carlee Joseph was named Meredith’s Athlete of the Year, and junior softball outfielder Sarah Watson collected the Dean Burris Coach’s Award. Student interns created a series of highlight videos shown throughout the event, coaches presented special team awards, and scholar-athletes were recognized for success in the classroom. The celebration culminated in a delicious dessert reception in the recently renovated Johnson Hall Rotunda.

Spread the news! Meredith coaches will host a series of youth summer sports camps beginning with a soccer day camp June 19 and capping off with volleyball’s overnight camp in late July. Learn more and register online

Athletic Director Jackie Myers announced last month the establishment of a new full-time athletics position funded in part by the NCAA Strategic Alliance Matching Grant and supported by the College. Longtime volleyball coach Fiona Barkley will step away from the court to embrace her new role as assistant athletic director for advancement and external relations. Barkley will focus her attention on building relationships with you, alumnae-athletes, and community partners in an effort to enhance the Meredith student-athlete experience. This summer’s volleyball camps will cap off her Meredith coaching tenure.
