"Little Utopia and Other Dances by Carol Kyles Finley" will be presented Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at 3 p.m. in Jones Auditorium at Meredith College. Finley is an associate professor of dance and director of dance at Meredith College.
The Independent Weekly selected the production as an Editor's Pick for this week.
The first major collection of Carol Finley's works since 2003 will include revised versions of "Fantasia on Break-Ups," "Funeral Spell," "Kitchen Stories," and "Settling," with new works "Prelude to Settling," and "Little Utopia." Joining the concert are It Must Have Been Violet Dance Productions artistic directors Susan Haines who will show a new work and Talani Torres who will present her solo for Amy Love Beasley.
Members of the Carol Finley Dance Group, Kaitlin Briggs, Aleah Ham Darnell, Lacy Lowder, Matney Murad, Kelsey Riner, Amy Sapp, Jodie Saunders, Sheryl Scott, Ashley Spears and Courtney Patterson White will perform Finley's work.
Expect highly theatrical modern dance with kitchen carts, trashcans, umbrellas, suitcases and a teddy bear. Finley's "Prelude to Settling" is a tap work, and both Haines and Torres incorporate video into their work.
Finley's work has been seen most recently at the Center for Performance Research in Brooklyn, NY, at the NC Dance Alliance Annual Concert, and with other university faculty at UNC-Greensboro.
Tickets are $10 general; $5 students, seniors, NCDA members, and free for Meredith College faculty, staff, and students.
