Kenyan Ambassador Visits Meredith

Meredith College welcomed Kenyan Ambassador Peter Ogego for an official visit to campus, August 25-26.

The ambassador’s schedule included a meeting with Meredith President Maureen Hartford, a tour of campus and opportunities to learn more about Meredith College.

There were two opportunities for Meredith community members to hear from Ambassador Ogego. The ambassador served as the guest speaker at the College’s weekly chapel service on August 26 in Jones Chapel, and took questions during a luncheon for faculty, staff and students.

Ambassador Ogego praised Meredith’s participation in the Zawadi Africa Education Fund. Through this partnership, which the College developed in 2007, assists Kenyan women to pursue college education.

Esther Wamunyu, ’12, one of three students from Kenya who currently attend Meredith through this partnership, introduced Ogego for the chapel presentation.

Participation in the Zawadi program has had “a great impact on my life,” Wamunyu said. “I am gaining a quality education, and the opportunity to develop as a leader.”

Ambassador Ogego explained that the Zawadi program is spearheaded by Susan Mboya, “a woman whose father was responsible for many Kenyans coming to the U.S. for education, including the father of President Barack Obama” through the Kennedy/Mboya Student Airlifts Program of the 1960s.

“Education is an area we take very seriously in Kenya,” said Ambassador Ogego.

This campus visit was a result of efforts made by Meredith’s Office of Admissions.

Last spring, Admissions Counselor Rebecca Lee visited embassies in Washington, D.C., speaking with representatives about Meredith and its programs, with the goal of attracting more international students.

Following this meeting with Lee, Ambassador Ogego and his staff requested an official visit to learn more about Meredith.
