Kappa Delta Pi Initiations Held April 1

Meredith College welcomed 34 new members into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honors society for education, during a ceremony held in Jones Chapel.

North Carolina Teacher of the Year Tyronna Hooker was the keynote speaker for the ceremony. Hooker is a social studies and exceptional children teacher at Graham Middle School in Graham, N.C with the Alamance Burlington School System. She has spent the 2011-12 academic year as an advocate and ambassador for the public schools of North Carolina.

Among the new members are 23 undergraduate education students, 19 graduate students who are earning a Master of Arts in Teaching or a Master of Education, and two education faculty members. Students must meet minimum grade point average requirements and be admitted to the teacher education program in order to be eligible.

Undergraduates joining Kappa Delta Pi were Lauren Allen, Sarah Azam, Anna Barefoot, Rachael Beckner, Miller Cheatham, Michelle Cox, Betsy Graves, Kelly Griffin, Mary Royall Hight,Whitney Jones, Carrie Klestinec, Ashley Matthews, Emily McLawhorn, Heather Ogilvie, Sarah Pannill, Katie Riggs, Natalie Rojano, Shelley Rose, Sydney Sauers, Kayla Seagroves, Emily Smith, Hannah Thornton, Jessica Troetti, and Allison Vincent.

New graduate student members are Virginia Claiborne, Theresa Cooper, Rebecca Dyer, Irene Goldenberg, Carolyn Gray, Rebecca Holt, Josielyn Jahromi, Julie Kemper, Sarah Magette, Pamela Nolan, Carrie Oliver, Catherine Pate, Victoria Parker, Jodie Perret-Gentil, Cheryle Poole, Kelly Rodney, Lora Rowe, Catherine Scheer, and Brittany Shepherd

Faculty members Courtney George and Cecilia Toole were also initiated into Kappa Delta Pi.

Established in 1911, Kappa Delta Pi has more than 45,000 members across the world promoting excellence in education and fellowship among those dedicated to teaching. Meredith received the charter for the Alpha Epsilon Psi chapter in April 2009, and has since held three initiation events.

The officers of Meredith’s chapter of the honor society are President Anna Williams, ’12, Membership Chair Sallie Lee, ’12, and Treasurer Danae Alig, ’12 (M.Ed.).
