Judge Who Decided Landmark Case to Speak March 23

Judge John E. Jones, III, will speak about “Our Constitution’s Intelligent Design” on March 23 at 7 p.m. in Meredith’s Jones Auditorium.

Jones is a U.S. District Court judge who presided over the landmark case of Kitzmiller v. Dover School District that pitted “Intelligent Design” against Darwin. Jones ruled that it is unconstitutional to teach intelligent design within a public school science curriculum.

The lecture is free and open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Meredith College Convocation Committee.

Jones began his service as a United States District Judge in August 2002. He is the 21st judge to sit in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Judge Jones was appointed to his current position by President George W. Bush in February 2002, and was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on July 30, 2002.

In May 2006 Jones was named by Time Magazine as one of its 100 most influential people in the world. He has also received a Rave Award for Policy from Wired Magazine. In 2006, Jones was the recipient of the first John Marshall Judicial Independence Award, which is presented annually by the Pennsylvania Bar Association. In 2005 the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania appointed Jones to the Pennsylvania Commission on Judicial Independence. Jones also sits on the Board of Directors of the Federal Judges Association.

The night prior to Jones’ lecture, Meredith College will host a viewing of the documentary “Kansas vs. Darwin, in Ledford 101 at 7 p.m. A panel discussion featuring faculty members from Meredith’s biological sciences, political science, education and religion and philosophy departments will follow.

Both events are approved as academic/cultural events in Meredith’s general education program.
