Interior Design Students Win Awards

Meredith College interior design students recently won awards in two design competitions.

Meredith students earned second place and an Honorable Mention in the Otto Zenke Competition, sponsored by the Carolinas Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (CCASID). Senior Erin Maynard, of Raleigh, N.C., won second place. She received an award of $750. Caroline Ashworth of Cramerton, N.C., received an Honorable Mention for her project.

The annual Otto Zenke student competition is open to all college and university Interior Design programs with Student Chapters of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) in North and South Carolina. Maynard and Ashworth were top winners out of 24 entries.

Martha Burpitt, professor of human environmental sciences, assigned the Otto Zenke competition project to her senior level interior design class; four projects that met all aspects of the problem statement were then submitted to the competition.

Otto Zenke was esteemed as one of the top interior designers in the world; he had design studios in Greensboro, New York and London. A scholarship fund was established in his memory for interior design students in the Carolinas.

WithIt Scholarship Winner 2011

Breanne Lutz, a senior Interior Design major from Sanford, N.C., won a $5,000 WithIt Scholarship. WithIt, a non-profit organization supporting women in the home furnishings industry, established the Jena and Stephen R. Hall Scholarships to recognize and nurture the academic endeavors of preeminent college students enrolled full-time in fields of study that would logically lead to careers in the home and furnishing industries.

Scholarships are presented annually in July. Judging is based on the student's academic performance, as reflected by the grade point average, SAT/ACT scores and curriculum selected. Subjective judging criteria includes: essays, references and statement of personal goals. Special emphasis is placed on involvement in extracurricular activities and the community. Financial need may be considered.

Meredith College has the Triangle area’s only interior design program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Click here for more information on interior design at Meredith.
