As part of our summer series of student advice, Meredith’s Office of Admissions asked a group of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors what activities they are participating in this summer. Whether studying abroad or in summer school on campus, gaining work experience or conducting research, Meredith students are making the most of the summer.
“This summer I took a three-week summer session to lighten my load for the fall semester. Fall is a busy time with lots of traditions (especially Cornhuskin’) and as a senior, I want to live my senior year to its fullest potential.” –Anna Williams, ’12
“I'm traveling to Sansepolcro, Italy for three weeks. I'm a Child Development major and I'll be going with a Meredith program called Eat, Play, Design. We will be staying at the Meredith palazzo and studying cross cultural play. I also took summer school classes at Meredith and helped with student advising.” —Brittany Murray, ’13
“I am taking a continuing education class to become a certified nursing assistant and volunteering in a hospital—basically getting experience for my future studies in nursing school after Meredith.” --Sanaa Bhatti, ’14
“I went to LeaderShape to kick-off my summer and I learned a lot about myself and about community. Now that it's over, I'm going to implement one of my goals through my job as a summer camp counselor. I hope to teach children about the importance of art and culture by doing crafts from different cultures.”-- Paisely Murff, ’13
“My summer schedule has been pretty busy. In May, I attended LeaderShape for a whole week. It was an amazing and life changing experience and I would recommend any freshman to participate in. I am doing research for the chemistry department, working under Dr. Mies with a couple of students. We are looking into the metals that are hypothesized to cause aggregations with beta amyloid peptide in the brain which eventually leads to Alzheimer disease. I work on the research in the mornings and work in the library in the afternoons.”-- Rodda Akelo Ouma, ’14
”This summer I am shadowing a surgeon to get familiar with the field I want to go into and I will also be doing some traveling along with some babysitting. Most importantly, I will start planning how the organization I am in charge of will run this coming up year and how we will make a difference on campus and in the community.” -- Cristina Rivera, ’14
”This summer I am working as an assistant unit leader at Camp Graham, a Girl Scout camp.” —Angel Jackson, ’13
“I am taking an online travel writing class, going to Costa Rica to study language and culture, and then working as a camp counselor when I get back.” -- Cecelia Blair, ’14
“This summer I will be spending a lot of my time in Guatemala working with Palabra de Vida missionaries, increasing my Spanish, and exploring the country.”-- Rebecca Jernigan, ’14
For this series, we’ll post responses to questions about the Meredith experience, academics and campus life at least once per week throughout the summer.
