Former Ambassador to the Middle East Lecture

Former U.S. Ambassador Edward Peck will speak at Meredith College on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011. His lecture will be held at 1 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium.

Peck’s speech is titled "Neither Quick, Nor Easy: Doing What's Right for America, Israel, Palestine and the Middle East - An Effort to Provoke Thoughts, Not People." His 32 years of service with the State Department included serving as President Ronald Reagan's deputy director of the Cabinet Task Force on Terrorism, chief of mission in Baghdad, Iraq for President Jimmy Carter and State Department deputy director of covert intelligence programs. Peck also served as a Foreign Service officer in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt, and was ambassador in Mauritania.

While with the State Department, Peck was director of the Office of Egyptian Affairs, liaison officer to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a fellow at the Institute for Higher Defense Studies at the Pentagon. He is a member of the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs, a distinguished visitor at the National War College and a Woodrow Wilson Foundation visiting fellow. The retired ambassador also serves on the Board of Directors of Americans for Middle East Understanding.

Peck has been a commentator and resource for MSNBC, Fox News and Democracy Now. He advocates for even handedness in U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, including Israel and Palestine. In May 2010 he was a passenger on one of the boats of the Gaza Aid Flotilla that was intercepted in international waters with the loss of nine lives. Peck is writing a book with a working title "Peck's Postulates: The Four Keys to Total Understanding of International Relations - You already know them, but may not have considered their application."

This lecture is free and open to the campus community. This event qualifies as an Academic / Cultural Event in General Education.
