Faculty/Staff Accomplishments and Departmental News 4/26/17

In this issue we celebrate the accomplishments of faculty and staff in the departments of biology, communication, English, history, marketing, nutrition, political science, research, planning and assessment, and sociology.

Professor of Biological Sciences Karthik Aghoram was quoted in a WRAL Techwire article about his role in NC Biotechnology Center workshops for teachers. The article was posted April 13.

President Jo Allen was a featured speaker at TEDxRaleigh 2017, held on Saturday, April 22.

Professor of English Rebecca Duncan was the final judge for the student essay contest sponsored by the Wake County chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She was also the keynote speaker at the organization’s April 20 meeting, where the winning students were honored. Her talk was entitled “Shaping Narratives.”

Executive Director of Marketing Kristi Eaves-McLennan served on the American Marketing Association (AMA) Triangle Chief Marketing Officer panel on April 20. McLennan was joined with chief marketing executives from SAS, UNC Health Care, and Northwestern Mutual Raleigh.

Associate Professor of Sociology Amie Hess was quoted in The New York Times for a March 30 story about the controversy caused by flyers in a Florida high school advising on “good girl” prom attire. Hess was also interviewed by several media outlets, including WUNC radio and Spectrum News 14 (formerly Time Warner Cable News) about the release of Meredith’s 2017 Status of Girls in North Carolina report.

Professor of Nutrition Bill Landis is featured in the newest episode of the Meredith Minute. Landis explains what happened to heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables – and why it matters.

Political Science faculty member David McLennan presented a paper, co-authored by Assistant Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo, on Trump voters and their perceptions of crime at the Southwestern Political Science Association meeting in Austin, Texas. In addition, junior Maria Diaz presented a paper—also authored by McLennan, Manzo, and sophomore Mary Kolisnichenko—on the impact of women county commissioners on county budgeting decisions. Finally, at the SWPSA meeting, McLennan was a discussant on a panel on media effects. In addition to participating in the conference, McLennan recently published two op-eds—one in The Charlotte Observer, written with Manzo, on hyper partisanship in North Carolina politics and another in The News and Observer on the impact of the HB2 passage and repeal.

Instructor of English Jason Newport co-moderated a workshop session called “The European Union,” for 40 attendees, on bridging the new social divides within and between nations, at the Berlin Seminar held by the German Fulbright Commission on March 26–30. Newport’s book review, “Melancholy by László Földényi” and “Toward Horizontal Thought: Interview with László Földényi” were published in Three Percent in April.

Survey and Report Specialist Dilnavaz Mirza Sharma presented a webinar for the Government Publishing Office’s (GPO) Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The webinar, hosted by the FDLP Academy, focused on the use of GIS tools for the assessment of public library facilities and services. The webinar, Using GIS: A Better Way to Assess Public Libraries, was attended by Federal librarians for professional credit and will be available through FDLP Academy’s website for future training purposes.

Associate Professor of Mass Communication Doug Spero attended the annual Broadcast Educators Association (BEA)/ National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conferences in Las Vegas, April 22-25. Spero participated in a BEA panel discussion about mass communication teaching methods that promote student learning.

English Instructor Jennifer Suchanec will participate in the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra’s performance of “Music With Her Silver Sound,” which features music to Shakespeare’s classics. It takes place in Jones Auditorium on Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m. Suchanec will be reciting a monologue from Merchant of Venice.

Professor of History Greg Vitarbo offered expert comments in an April 6 article in The New York Times about a cartoon image of Vladimir Putin wearing makeup that has been banned in Russia.
