Faculty Member to Participate in Maine Media Workshop

Assistant Professor of Art Shannon Johnstone has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to participate in the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine this month.

Johnstone’s scholarship was awarded by the Carter Foundation, which funds a North Carolina-based photographer’s participation in the workshop. The weeklong workshop in Documentary Portraiture will be held June 21-27. The workshop features Debbie Fleming Caffery, who Johnstone calls one of her photography heroes.

Participating in the workshop will benefit Johnstone while she is on sabbatical during the Fall 2009 semester. She is working on a documentary photography project about dogs and cats in animal shelters, which she hopes will promote responsible pet ownership.

“I am hoping the workshop will help me focus my ideas and edit the work I have done so far,” said Johnstone. “It is really exciting for me to have the opportunity early on in the sabbatical so that I can use what I learn in Maine in my project and then eventually bring it back to the classroom.”

Johnstone joined Meredith’s faculty in 2001. Her areas of expertise are photography, digital imaging and graphic design..
