Ellen Goodman to Lecture February 23

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ellen Goodman will speak at Meredith College on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium.

Prior to her public lecture, Goodman will participate in an informal reception and discussion session for students at 3:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium. This event is open to local college students and the broader campus community.

Goodman's Pulitzer Prize-winning commentary on social change and its impact on families has appeared in more than 300 newspapers, making her one of the two most syndicated columnists in the United States. Her column was syndicated by The Washington Post Writers Group beginning in 1976 through her retirement in early 2010. She is the author of three books and six collections of her columns have been published.

In addition to the 1980 Pulitzer for distinguished commentary, Goodman has won the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award, the Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award, the Ernie Pyle Award for Lifetime Achievement, and others. Goodman worked at Newsweek, the Detroit Free Press and, in 1967, she began writing for The Boston Globe. A 1963 cum laude graduate of Radcliffe College, Goodman returned to Harvard in 1973-74 as a Nieman Fellow, where she studied the dynamics of social change. In 2007, she was a Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

This lecture, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College. Each year, the series is designed around Meredith’s campus theme. For 2009-10, the campus theme is “Catalysts for Change.”

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College stimulates and enhances the intellectual and academic climate at Meredith College and the broader community..
