Best-Selling Author Khaled Hosseini Visits Meredith College
Best-selling author Khaled Hosseini visited Meredith College as part of a Quail Ridge Books event co-sponsored by Meredith’s Friends of the Library on Saturday, June 15, 2013, in Jones Auditorium. The event featured an on-state interview with the author of “The Kite Runner” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns” with WUNC Radio Frank Stasio, host of “The State of Things.” Hosseini discussed his latest novel, “And the Mountains Echoed.”
When asked how the storylines in his new book came together, Hosseini talked about his writing process.
“My books never, ever go where I think they are going to go,” Hosseini said. “This book followed that same pattern.”
Hosseini said this book was more complex than his previous work. “I am drawn now to characters who are conflicted … it requires an act of restraint to let it be, and allow people [in the book] to be messy and mysterious.”
The author’s visit was a fundraiser for The Khaled Hosseini Foundation, which provides humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan. Hosseini is a Goodwill Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the UN Refugee Agency.
Hosseini said a visit to Afghanistan inspired him to start the foundation. While efforts like his will help, “what we, those living in exile, are capable of is limited. The future of Afghanistan is in the hands of the young people of Afghanistan,” Hosseini said.
Hosseini also took questions from the audience and signed books at the event conclusion.
