Be Part of Meredith’s Summer Reading Program

The Meredith College community will read “Enrique’s Journey” by Sonia Nazario for the College’s 2011 Summer Reading Program. The author will present a public lecture on campus on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at 7 p.m.

“Enrique’s Journey,” the story of a young Honduran boy’s perilous quest to locate his mother in the United States, began as a Pulitzer Prize-winning story for The Los Angeles Times. The article won more than a dozen awards, among them the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, the George Polk Award for International Reporting, the Grand Prize of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Guillermo Martinez-Marquez Award for Overall Excellence.

Nazario has more than 20 years of experience reporting and writing about social issues. She began her career at the Wall Street Journal, where she reported from four bureaus: New York, Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles. In 1993, she joined the Los Angeles Times.

Nazario serves on the advisory boards of the University of North Texas Mayborn Literary Non-fiction Writer’s Conference and of Catch the Next, a non-profit working to double the number of Latinos enrolling in college. She is also on the board of Kids In Need of Defense, a non-profit launched by Microsoft and Angelina Jolie to provide pro-bono attorneys to unaccompanied immigrant children. She is a graduate of Williams College and has a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

The Summer Reading Program began at Meredith in 1999, with “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years” by Sarah L. Delany and A. Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth. Other selections have included “Night” by Elie Wiesel (2003), “No Ordinary Time” by Doris Kearns Goodwin (2006), “Unbowed” by Wangari Mathaai (2009) and “Half the Sky” by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn (2010).
