The Meredith basketball team clinched fifth-place in USA South North division standings last weekend to earn the program’s first conference tournament bid since 2010. The Avenging Angels finished off the William Peace Pacers 74-64 Wednesday, February 19, and held a slight lead over Averett heading into the final weekend of regular season action.

A loss to the Pride of Greensboro College left Meredith vulnerable, but a shift across the division that same night secured the tournament bid. Sunday’s Senior Day event versus Averett capped off the weekend with a 79-74 loss in an exciting offensive battle.

Follow Meredith’s tournament journey beginning with round one Thursday at 7 p.m. The tournament host Ferrum Panthers will offer a live broadcast and live stats throughout the tournament.

The softball team opened the 2014 campaign last weekend as host of the Triangle Classic. With a split in the action both Saturday and Sunday, the Avenging Angels posted a 2-2 record with wins over St. Andrews and Salem College. Conference play opens March 1 at Lagrange and March 2 in Montgomery, Alabama, with Huntingdon College.

The 16th Annual Meredith College Golf Classic will be held at the Arnold Palmer signature course of Brier Creek Country Club Monday, April 7. Lunch will be served prior to the 1 p.m. shotgun start, and the day includes a putting contest, silent auction, snacks and cookout. The Meredith community is encouraged to support this event as a player, volunteer, hole sponsor or booster. Register online by February 28 and receive a 10% discount!

This year we used proceeds from the tournament to refurbish the bleachers in Weatherspoon Gymnasium and added protective fencing and netting to the softball dugouts. Contact Tournament Director Fiona Barkley for creative opportunities to join the fun.
