Awards Event Celebrates Meredith Faculty and Staff

Meredith College celebrated its employees at the annual Faculty and Staff Awards and Recognition Celebration, held on Friday, April 4, 2014. 

The following faculty and staff were presented with awards:

PAULINE DAVIS PERRY AWARDS
Associate Professor of History Dan Fountain, Award for Research, Publication or Artistic Achievement. Fountain, who joined Meredith’s faculty in 2004, presented the 2014 Faculty Distinguished Lecture.

The Pauline Davis Perry Award for Research and Publication and/or Artistic Achievement is given to a faculty member who has done exceptional research, publication and/or artistic achievement.

Professor of Chemistry Walda Powell, Award for Excellence in Teaching. Powell has been a member of Meredith’s faculty since 1995.

The Pauline Davis Perry Award for Excellence in Teaching is given to an outstanding teacher at Meredith. 
 

LAURA HARRILL PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS
Professor of Human Environmental Sciences Deborah Tippett, Associate Professor of Business Jane Barnes, Associate Professor of Economics Anne York, and Associate Professor of Business Mary Jane Lenard.

Tippett joined Meredith’s faculty in 1987. Barnes has been a member of the faculty since 2003, York since 1999, and Lenard since 2005.

The Laura Harrill Presidential Awards are presented to faculty members each year, in recognition of their noteworthy contributions to the advancement of Meredith College. 

HARRY AND MARION EBERLY FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Assistant Professor of Computer Science Kristin Watkins, a member of Meredith’s faculty since 1998.

The Harry and Marion Eberly Faculty Development Awards are given to deserving faculty members for the purpose of helping them progress in their area of expertise. 

IDA H. FRIDAY FACULTY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
Assistant Professor of Business Bing Yu, a member of Meredith’s faculty since 2008.

The Ida H. Friday Award was established in 2010 by former UNC System President William Friday and his family in honor of his wife, Ida Friday, a 1941 Meredith graduate. The fund supports faculty development, with preference given to faculty members who are early in their careers.

ACCESS AWARD
Associate Professor of Art Dana Gay, who joined Meredith’s faculty in 2007.

The Access Award honors a member of the faculty or staff at Meredith College who has made significant contributions toward the advocacy, support, encouragement and success of students with disabilities. Nominations are collected from students with disabilities and are voted on by the Disability Services Panel.

ALLEN AND BARBARA PAGE PRESIDENTIAL STAFF AWARD
Director of Visual Communications Vanessa Harris, was recognized for her work in support of the launch and design of the Meredith College Going Strong brand. Harris joined Meredith’s staff in 2006.

Established in 2002, the Presidential Staff Award is given in recognition of exemplary service to the Meredith community. The Meredith College president chooses the recipient. The awards were renamed in 2012 in honor of former vice president for academic programs Allen Page and his wife, Barbara Page, ’54.

STAFF RECOGNITION AWARDS
Electronic Communications Manager Dave Timberlake, who joined Meredith’s staff in 2001, and Chaplain Stacy Pardue, a member of Meredith’s staff since 2010.

Staff Recognition Awards are presented annually to two staff members who, through their job performance, have demonstrated initiative, teamwork, extra effort and outstanding customer service to the Meredith community.

JANICE COFFEY SWAB SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
Assistant Professor of Biology Erin Lindquist was recognized for her support of Meredith’s sustainability efforts, including leading the environmental sustainability academic program, and coordinating a grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation. Lindquist joined Meredith’s faculty in 2006.

The Janice Coffey Swab Sustainability Award award recognizes an employee or department who exemplifies Meredith’s sustainability vision. The award was named in recognition of Professor Emerita Janice Swab’s consistent and long-standing advocacy for environmental awareness and sustainability at Meredith and beyond.

In addition to the awards, retiring faculty and staff members were honored. Professor of Mathematics Jacquelin Dietz, Professor of Biology Larry Grimes, Reference Librarian Susan McClintock, Housekeeper Louise Silver, Associate Professor of Human Environmental Sciences Diane Strangis, and Recruitment Specialist Ann Troutman were all recognized for their dedicated service to Meredith College.

Faculty and staff were also recognized for service awards for five, ten, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service.
