In spite of Old Man Winter’s visit, the Meredith College spring sports season began last week.
The lacrosse team jump started their second season with 15 new student-athletes on the roster. Seven members of last year’s charter team will anchor the program, including the USA South’s 2013 Rookie of the Year Katie Burnet. The team kicks off the competition season at Sweet Briar and hosts Virginia Wesleyan in the home opener Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Head Softball Coach Kim Scavone and her squad open the 2014 season at home with the Triangle Classic. Meredith will play in four of the six games during the two-day event beginning Saturday, Feb. 22.
Meredith graduate and current student in the College’s Master of Education program Amanda Beirne returns to the pitcher’s circle for her final season with the Avenging Angels. A two-time USA South All-Conference honoree and 2013 team MVP, Beirne joins hands with seniors Lorri Cole, Leah Friedman, Ashley Green, and Whitney Williams in pursuit of a winning season.
Under the leadership of new Head Tennis Coach Meredith Vincent, the Avenging Angel tennis team will make another run at a league title this spring. Three-time conference Player of the Year Puja Patel, along with No. 1 doubles partner Caroline Hunt and senior leader Mary Lawrence Newton, will follow their coach’s guidance in pursuit of excellence.
The tennis team opens the challenging schedule with NCAA Division II Barton College and Pfeiffer University mid-February. The USA South season begins on the road in March with the home opener March 7 versus Covenant College.
The Meredith basketball season continues with the tough USA South schedule in full swing. The Avenging Angels are scheduled to face cross-town rival William Peace University on January 30 (rescheduled from January 29 because of snow), and follow with nationally ranked Ferrum College February 1 in Weatherspoon Gym. Junior McKenzi Edwards leads the team in scoring with a per-game average of 16.9 points and 2.3 steals. Teammate Keyanka Bailey contributes double-digit scoring and averages 6.1 rebounds per game to lead Meredith.
