Alumna Silda Wall Spitzer will deliver the 2012 commencement address at Meredith College. Meredith College's commencement exercises will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012, at 10 a.m. in McIver Amphitheater.
Spitzer, former First Lady of the State of New York, is principal at NewWorld Capital Group, which she joined in January 2012. Prior to this position, she was a managing director at Metropolitan Capital Advisors, where she led strategic and business development.
In 1996, Spitzer founded Children for Children, a not-for-profit organization that fosters community involvement and social responsibility in young people. As executive director, she helped build Children for Children into an innovative enterprise engaging more than 1 million children.
Spitzer is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York, the New York State Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association. She is vice chair of the Urban Green Council, the New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Cuoncil (USGBC), which advances sustainability in the urban-built environment.
Spitzer earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and history from Meredith College in 1980. She also holds a law degree from Harvard Law School.
Meredith College commencement speakers are chosen based on input from the senior class. The Class of 2012 also helped the College make another decision for this year’s commencement. The senior class has chosen to wear maroon caps and gowns for the 2012 commencement exercises.
“Meredith undergraduates have chosen to distinguish themselves from area college graduates and visually express their pride in Meredith’s rich heritage and lasting legacy,” said President Jo Allen, ’80.
