Alumna Gretchen Holt Witt, ‘89, is National Women of Worth Honoree
Meredith alumna Gretchen Holt Witt, ’89, has been named the 2011 National L'Oréal Women of Worth Honoree. Witt is the co-founder of Cookies for Kids' Cancer, a non-profit that uses bake sales to raise money and awareness of pediatric cancer.
Through the Women of Worth program, L’Oreal Paris recognizes, celebrates and supports women who are making a difference in their communities. Witt was one of 10 finalists for the Women of Worth award. Each finalist received a $10,000 donation to her non-profit organization. As the National Women of Worth Honoree, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer will receive an additional donation of $25,000 from L'Oréal Paris.
Witt served as commencement speaker at Meredith in 2010. In her speech, Witt said her Meredith education had given her the strength and tools needed to turn her desire to do something after her son, Liam, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma into Cookies for Kids’ Cancer.
"Within an alumna of Meredith College is the power to change the world," Witt said. "But Meredith women don't change the world because it's easy, or fun, or for the fame that goes with the change. Meredith women change the world because when faced with a crisis or a challenge, or a situation that must be changed … we step forward and make change happen."
