Summer Research Project Analyzes Organic vs. Non-Organic Plants

Professor of Nutrition Bill Landis and a team of student researchers worked on a summer research project that examined the nutritional differences between organic and non-organic plants.

The project, “Analysis of Vitamin C in Organic versus Non-organic” Plants, was one of 14 summer projects funded for summer 2013 through the Undergraduate Research Project. Their projects ranged across disciplines, including natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

Undergraduate Research Program Director Paul Winterhoff said the summer stipend project has several goals.

“First and foremost, the program provides opportunities for student learning about how to do research in their prospective or chosen field,” Winterhoff said. “This learning is keyed by relationships with professor/mentors and with peers.”

Landis worked with Meredith students Sanaa Bhatti and Rachel Powell.  N.C. School of Science and Mathematics student Maureen Xu joined the team as part of Meredith’s new partnership with the residential high school for gifted students.
