Popay's Revolt

Up

Popay (or Pope) was a remarkable Pueblo spiritual and political leader.  He planned a revolt against the Spanish, who in the 1600s were trying in a heavy-handed way to destroy traditional Pueblo religious practices.  So what did Popay do & how did he pull it off?   Who was Popay? Where was he from? Why did he hate the Spanish so deeply?  Whatever happened to him?  What in the world does the sculptor have him holding in his hand? What is the legacy of the revolt Popay led?

Pick this topic if you are interested in early Spanish and Indian relations in the Southwest. Or if you lean toward biography. Interesting man with an interesting plan...
