de las Casas

Up

He came to the New World to save the souls of the natives.  What he saw was the Spanish abuse and slaughter of the indigenous population. He observed and documented the disastrous effects of Old World diseases on the Indians the Spanish encountered. He became a champion for Indian rights -- advocating for their rights on both sides of the Atlantic. What was his connection with Columbus?  How many trips did he make to the New World? What did he write? Is his account accurate?  What is the "Black Legend?" Tell us about this voice of conscience in Spain's New World. (Big hint: when searching for de las Casas in indexes to books and in encyclopedias, look under "de las Casas," "las Casas," and "Casas." You might find it indexed in any one of those ways!
