Kit Carson was the hero to many American school boys.  The Navaho have a very different opinion of this frontiersman, however. He led an attack on the Navajo in the heart of their homeland -- Canyon de Chelly. The men under his command attacked the resistant Dineh with a scorched earth policy.  They burned vast fields of Navajo corn and cut down thousands of peach trees. Against the Navajo starvation worked better than guns.
Why did Kit Carson get sent out against the Navajo? What led up to the eventual surrender of the Navajo?  What happened at happened at Canyon del Muerto & how is it remembered by the Navajo?  How was the Navajo campaign regarded by Kit Carson & other non-Indians. What resulted from the defeat at Canyon del Muerto?  Show us what happened at Canyon de Chelly in the mid-1860's....
